Exercise - Finishing into 2v2 wave practice
Add to favorites
Description:
  • This is a wave practice designed to develop players’ ability to attack quickly, create goalscoring opportunities and finish.
  • The practice takes place in and around the penalty area, with a goalkeeper and main goal. Two mini-goals are situated on either side of the area, with two mannequins on the 18-yard line. Two players start behind each mannequin, with two more sets of two next to each mini-goal on each side.
  • To begin, one player from behind one of the mannequins will dribble past it and look to score past the goalkeeper. Once a shot is taken, a teammate from behind the other mannequin will join to combine with the first player and attempt a second finish. This is shown in the top diagram.
  • Once that phase is over, two players from the opposite team will break out from behind the mini-goals on one side and attack the two players who have just combined and try to finish into one of the mini-goals on the other side. This is shown in the bottom diagram.
  • The final phase sees two players from behind the opposite mini-goals break out and attack the two who have just attacked, again looking to score in the other mini-goals. Play then resets for the next rep.
  • Players should rotate positions within their teams after each block.

Coaching point:

  • Driving into space: When play develops into a 2v2, the ball-carrier should look to take advantage if the defensive pairing find themselves disjointed. Being ready and driving into the space may put the defensive pair on the back foot.
  • Decision-making: The ball-carrier in the 2v2 should be placed under primary focus and challenged on their decision-making. Looking to combine with their teammate, or staying on the ball to dominate their opponent in a 1v1, are two of the options they may take.
  • Realism: The coach should challenge the players with performing all actions at a high tempo. Trying to create game realism within this practice is important.
